[He's pretty sure that's what Blake means, and he may be stalling before giving an answer he won't like.]

I know. And if it turns out everything worth looking into's underwater, I'm not going to be a whole lot of help anyway, so there's no point in me going.

But if that turns out to be something we can get around, I can't pass up the opportunity to try to get some answers. Especially since everyone here's so focused on the magic side of things, I don't exactly have a lot of confidence they won't miss something more mundane.

[And searching a crime scene is one of Jayden's talents, with or without ARI's assistance.]

I have a bad feeling about this. What if something happens?

It might, but at least I'd be walking into it prepared. We already know something can happen here even when you're playing it safe.

That doesn't mean to throw caution to the wind. Who's paying for this expedition? Who's controlling it? For what purpose? What's to be gained? Are they asking any of these questions? Are you?

We aren't to the point of any of that yet; we don't even have permission to go, it's all still theoretical. I don't know if anyone else is going to ask any of those questions or any others, which is part of the reason I've been thinking about being involved, because those are important things to be worrying about.

You know you don't owe a damn thing to this place, right? It's taken more than it can ever give you.

[It takes a moment before Jayden can figure out how to reply to that, having not expected it and certainly not having worked out his own thoughts and emotions in regard to the subject.]

I know. I'm not doing it out of a sense of obligation, or at least not primarily.

[There might be a little of that, especially when it comes to feeling like he could be useful, but doing so for the sake others is only a small part of his overall more selfish motives. And although he initially thinks about not saying anything more, he finally also adds something more honest than he usually ever is.]

I've missed my chance to get answers before. I don't want this to be another thing I have questions about forever.

[ Blake isn't expecting the reasoning, although he understands it deeply. He doesn't like to give in, though, and it's impossible to speak his mind without putting both feet into his mouth. A moment passes before he finally responds. ]

Okay. Just in case no one's said it, this isn't all on you, either. But I don't think I can go back. I don't think I can go with you.

I know. But I'll keep it in mind.

It's okay. You don't have to, and I'm not expecting you to. We're all handling this differently.

Though speaking of handling things, I may start a fight if people who weren't even here at the time keep making judgements.

I'm handling myself fine. What sort of trouble's starting? I'm trying not to pay attention to any of it.

Someone was mad about the info including the names of the cultist and her brother that escaped with the first group, and a new arrival was insulting everyone who voted against executing the other cultists. So nothing serious, just annoying.

Sounds serious. Any chance it'll put a target on your back? So I know what to look out for.

I doubt it. Probably a classic case of being a lot bolder behind text--magical or otherwise--than they would dare be face to face, and it's not like either of them knows anything about me anyway. So don't worry, it should be fine.
